Sister Martha Honored during D-Backs Game

The Arizona Diamondbacks through their D-backs Give Back charity foundation recently recognized Sister Marth Carpenter, with the third annual Nicole Hazen 4 Kindness Award during their Aug. 25 game against the Chicago Cubs at Chase Field.

For over 40 years, Sister Martha has served the Gila River Indian Community as a teacher and principal at Saint Peter Indian Mission School in Bapchule, District 5. She’s made it her life’s work to provide joy, movement, cultural pride, and quality education for the thousands of children who’ve attended the school during her tenure.

“Thank you Dbacks for honoring such an amazing Sister who, by the grace of God, was able to serve so many generations of students on the Gila River Indian Reservation at St. Peter Indian Mission School,” the school said in a statement on social media. “She is the family to so many. She also served 14 years with the Menominees and touch many of their hearts as well.”

The Nicol Hazen 4 Kindness Award honors the late Nicole Haze, who was the wife of Diamondbacks General Manager Mike Hazen.

The mission of the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation is to support three main areas of need: homelessness, indigent healthcare and children’s programs of all types including education and youth baseball. In addition, the Foundation has created strategic programs that address the needs of our community including veterans, police, teachers, firefighters, first responders and more.
