Veteran ID Cards

There are different types of veteran ID cards. The one that most people are familiar with is the veteran health care ID card. When a veteran has a service-connected disability rating, they are entitled to health care from the VA. Even without a disability rating, they may qualify for one of the VA priority groups for health care entitlement. The health care ID card has an expiration date listed on the card! It’s usually 10 years from the time it was issued. Veterans may call Enrollment to see if they qualify for health care under one of the priority groups at 877-222-8387. To get a disability rating, veterans can contact this office for assistance with filing a claim. To replace the veteran health care card, contact a local VA office.

The Veteran ID card is a general card that verifies the status as a veteran. This card can be used at retailers/other places that offer veteran discounts and services. This card does not indicate that a veteran is or is not eligible for VA health care.  To qualify for this card, veterans must have an honorable or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. If the discharge is uncharacterized, the VA will verify eligibility before issuing a card. Veterans will need a copy of the DD214 to apply. Other information or documentation needed includes the SSN, a copy of the DD214/NG22, a valid government-issued ID (driver’s license/passport, etc.), and a photo with specific specifications. The VA website can be checked to determine the exact requirements.

The DOD cards are for active duty, retired, reservists, DOD civilians, contractors, and family members. It shows your DOD status for things like base privileges, commissaries, and exchanges.

Many states, including Arizona, allow the word “VETERAN” on the driver’s license. Make sure to take the DD214 to the Motor Vehicle Department.

All IDs will contain your photo.
