CHANDLER, Ariz. — The Gila River Health Initiative hosted a beginner’s golf clinic for women in the Gila River Indian Community at the Whirlwind Golf Club on Sept. 22

The clinic brought together a dozen women to learn the fundamentals of the game, build confidence and connect with others who are interested in golf.

Brandon Gordon, head golf professional, and Dan McCabe, assistant golf professional with Whirlwind Golf Club taught participants the basic golf techniques and allowed them to practice their swings and gain hands-on experience in a welcoming environment.

“I had a lot of fun. I enjoyed learning the basics of golf and how to do a hit,” said Mary Elias, from District 6. “I feel like I got better throughout the time.”

Most of them women had very little to no experience in golf, but all agreed the event allowed them to step outside their comfort zone, develop new skills and enjoy time on the course while connecting with fellow Community members.

“I loved it. I love the outdoors, I love the scenery,” said Georgia Salas. “I love the instructors. It was really nice. It was a very good experience.”

With the success of the event, Gila River Health Initiative is looking to plan similar clinics including a follow up to the beginner series to allow participants to advance their new skills.
