Community members of all ages gathered to celebrate Earth Day with an annual event hosted by Gila River Indian Community’s Department of Environmental Quality on Friday, March 27. The event focused on environmental awareness, education, and fun. The event brought together several organizations, students, and families for a day filled with interactive learning and community connection.

A variety of informational booths were set up throughout DEQ’s Environmental Education Center offering resources on sustainability, conservation, recycling, and eco-friendly practices. Local groups and volunteers were on hand to answer questions and share tips on how individuals can make a positive impact on the environment.

Students participated in dedicated sessions designed to engage and educate younger attendees. These sessions included discussions on protecting natural resources, as well as creative activities that encouraged environmental stewardship.

Hands-on activities were a highlight of the event, giving attendees the opportunity to get involved directly. From planting demonstrations to interactive crafts using recycled materials, participants were able to learn by doing.

In addition to the educational components, guests enjoyed a free lunch and live music provided by Gertie and the T.O. Boyz that added to the festive atmosphere, creating an inviting space for the Community to gather and celebrate.

Earth Day is observed annually on April 22 and serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting the planet and preserving natural resources for future generations. It encourages individuals and communities to take action, whether through reducing waste, conserving water, planting trees, or participating in local clean-up efforts. Events like this one highlight the simple, meaningful ways people can celebrate Earth Day and make a positive impact in their everyday lives.
